Thank you for your interest in the CCPS prekindergarten programs. The prekindergarten program was developed in 1979 by the Maryland State Department of Education to meet the needs of low-income students who may not have the necessary readiness skills to be successful in school. Students are selected for prekindergarten based on the criteria and guidelines set by the Maryland State Department of Education and Calvert County Public Schools.

Income is required to verify eligibility for ALL applications. Applicants that exceed the income eligibility threshold will be placed on a waitlist. If vacancies remain after income eligible students have been admitted, any remaining seats will be filled using locally determined risk factors and are served in rank order. Consideration for these open seats may not begin until October 2022. (1) COMAR 12a.06.02.02 (2) Head Start Regulation 1302.12i

For placement the Federal Poverty Guidelines are used. Different levels of income can be accepted for different programs. Programs are funded through local funds, Blueprint funds and grant funds. The income percentages are dictated by the program. Never before have we been able to consider families up to 300% over income for some programs. All prekindergarten programs follow the same Early Learning Standards and provide the same experience regardless of funding method.

CCPS prekindergarten programs are located at the following schools: Barstow Elementary, Beach Elementary, Calvert Elementary, Dowell Elementary, Huntingtown Elementary, Patuxent-Appeal Campus, St. Leonard Elementary, Sunderland Elementary, and Windy Hill Elementary. There is a combination of half day and full day programming throughout the county.

Maryland State Department of Education released a Prekindergarten Expansion Grant to private prekindergarten providers. Additional prekindergarten programming may be available in the private provider setting. These approved programs will follow MSDE’s Early Learning Standards in early language, literacy, the science of reading, early mathematics, and social foundations. These programs will work collaboratively with Calvert County Public Schools Early Childhood Department. If your child is eligible for programming, we will notify you of the additional sites beyond the public school buildings in which your child could attend once the private providers have been identified.

If you have any questions, please contact our offices at 443-550-8040 and Cindy Michael will take a message for the application processors. Someone will call you back shortly. Thank you.
